What is a postpartum doula?

A postpartum doula is a trained professional who supports families after the birth of a baby. Unlike a medical provider, a postpartum doula focuses on the whole family - offering newborn care, feeding support, emotional encouragement, and practical help at home. Think of us as your steady, experienced, nonjudgmental support person for the weeks and months after birth.

How is a postpartum doula different from a nanny or a night nurse?

Doulas focus on holistic care and support for the whole family, nurturing each into their new roles. A night nurse/nanny provides direct infant care, with little to no interaction or emotional/educational/physical support to parents. Both roles are important, but it is crucial to know the difference!

What’s the difference between daytime and overnight support?

Daytime support helps families navigate the busy waking hours - newborn care, feeding guidance, household tasks, and emotional support while you're finding your footing. Overnight support is designed for one purpose: making sure you sleep. Your doula handles everything through the night so you can get the rest your body needs to heal and thrive. Many families use both.

What does a typical postpartum doula visit look like?

Every visit is shaped around what your family needs that day. You might spend time working through a breastfeeding challenge, talking through your baby's sleep cues, or simply resting while your doula handles the baby and tidies the kitchen. There's no rigid agenda - just responsive, thoughtful care from the moment we arrive.

Do you accept all types of families?

Absolutely and wholeheartedly. Next Phase Doula Care proudly serves all families - LGBTQ+ families, single parents, first-time parents, and families growing beyond their first child. Every family deserves to feel seen and supported without judgment.

What’s included in your postpartum doula services?

Postpartum services include, but are not limited to:

  • infant care, feeding, diapering, soothing

  • support for rest and recovery of the birthing parent

  • light household tasks related to newborn care (bottle washing/prep, laundry, etc.)

  • sleep guidance based on family preferences

  • potential additional tasks like assembly of small baby-related items, Amazon returns, etc.

How can a doula help me overnight if I’m breastfeeding?

A postpartum doula can provide a variety of support for breastfeeding parents. Doulas provide hands-on assistance with latch, positioning, troubleshooting, education, and emotional support. Specifically for overnight support, your doula can bring baby to you for nursing sessions and collect and store breastmilk for bottles and/or freezing.

When should I book (how far in advance)?

The earlier the better! Many families book during pregnancy so support is in place from day one. That said, we welcome families at any stage of the postpartum period - whether your baby is two weeks or four months old, it's never too late to ask for help. Reach out and we'll do our best to make it work.

What are your rates, and do you offer packages?

We offer both single-visit rates and multi-visit packages for daytime and overnight support. Packages are a great option for families who want consistent, ongoing care at a better value. Pricing details are shared during your free consultation, where we can put together a plan that fits your needs and budget.

Is there a minimum number of hours for a visit?

Overnight postpartum support shifts are 8-10 hours, with a minimum of 2 nights. Daytime postpartum support shifts are 3-4 hours, with a minimum of 12 hours.

Do you accept insurance or HSA/FSA payments?

Postpartum doula services are not typically covered by traditional health insurance, but many families are able to use HSA or FSA funds to pay for support. We recommend checking with your benefits provider. We accept Zelle, Venmo, CashApp, credit card. (Zelle is preferred and a 10% charge per Venmo or CashApp transaction to cover service fees.) We are happy to provide documentation for reimbursement purposes if needed.

What forms of payment are accepted?

Zelle is preferred. Venmo and Cashapp accepted, but will include a 10% fee to cover processing charges.

How do I get started?

It starts with a free virtual consultation - a relaxed, no-pressure conversation where we get to know each other and talk through what support would feel best for your family. From there, we'll build a plan together.
